Night of the stars at Mbombela excellence Awards

After years of selfless dedication to the development of their communities and up-liftment of those less fortunate in society, some of the stars of the Mbombela Local Municipality were awarded with tokens of appreciation by the Executive Mayor of Mbombela Local Municipality Cllr. Lassy Chiwayo on the weekend. Among the dignitaries present were Public Works MEC Madala Masuku, councillors and several members of the provincial legislature.  The Mbombela Excellence awards, which are a first for the Municipality were held at a glittering function at the Community Hall in the Nelspruit Civic Centre.  There were awards for various categories including dedication and excellence in music, business, sports, and involvement or role in politics.

Among those honored on the night, included Mpumalanga’s famous sons Muso Ray Chikapa Phiri, Gospel Diva Rebecca Malope and musician, producer Sipho Makhabane. SAFA Lowveld President Reuben Mahlalela was also honoured for his role in the development of sports (Soccer) in the Lowveld region and Mpumalanga

Speaking at the launch of the awards Mbombela Executive Mayor CLLR. Lassy Chiwayo says the time had come to create positive-role models for the youth and future generations. ”Our area, our Province is rich with talent and dedicated men and women. Individuals who cared and have over the years given selflessly without expecting any rewards other than to see an improvement in  the lives of our people” the concept of the excellence awards was borne out of a wish to re-connect our young generation with the source. That spirit of caring for one’s community and fellow men and women.” The last and important category of awards were handed posthumously to family members of struggle martyrs such as the late Portia Shabangu, Lele Mohlala, Mthandazo Ngobeni, and Phillip Radebe.

According to Cllr Chiwayo, the list of deserving people and stars of the Mbombela Local Municipality is endless and only a few were identified as this was only the beginning. Future recipients of awards will increase as more categories will be added to the list.
